How to Deal with an Atheist if You’re a Practicing Christian

Share

Every Christian knows that Christianity is more than just a religion but a way of life.  It means that your faith should manifest in the way you handle everyday issues and treat everybody else, including those who don’t share your beliefs.  One of the challenges you are likely to face as a practicing Christian is dealing with atheists.  Unlike other people whose faith and forms of worship are different from yours, atheists do not believe in divinity.  Put simply, they do not believe in God, or any god, for that matter.  Although atheists make up only 2% of the world’s population, that still makes for 150 million people.  As choice, diversity, and freedom are promoted more these days, the probability of interaction between Christians and atheists increases.  Keeping these in mind would help you respond to the situation better.

Your concept of respect is still the same

Despite differences in ideologies, people should have mutual respect.  Even when the other party doesn’t treat you fairly, following Jesus means that real Christians should not discriminate.  Avoid being a modern-day Pharisee.  Remember that Jesus died for everyone, including those who do not believe in Him.  As written in Matthew, it’s the sick who needs the doctor the most.

Try not to make the same mistakes that other Christians make

Some Christians are so passionate about faith that they tend to judge other people, which is the exact opposite of what emulating Christ means.  No matter what denomination you belong to, treat even non-believers with kindness.  You don’t have to challenge everyone to a debate or shove Scripture down their throats.  The irony of being a Christian is that everything you do is magnified, especially if it contradicts the Bible.  The best way to deal with atheists and people of other faith is to live an authentic Christian life.  If the need to defend your faith arises, stick only to biblical arguments and don’t resort to judgmental remarks.

Being a Christian opens you up to so many pressures.  It seems as if everybody is watching your every move: how you react to certain issues and how you treat other people.  The biggest concern that most Christians have is dealing with people of different beliefs, especially those who don’t believe in a god.  Despite differences in faith, remember to treat people with kindness and respect.  Avoid being judgmental, and when the situation calls for you to defend your faith, don’t deviate from the teachings of the Bible.  The only way you can defend Jesus is to show everyone how He has brought positive changes in your life.
