Due to hormonal changes and the physical and emotional changes during pregnancy, women may also experience mood swings that might affect their relationship with their own spouses and the people dear to them.

It may be observed that a pregnant woman may be anxious at one point yet also depressed at another moment.  She may become sad, tense, angry or irritable over small issues.  The husband should try to understand these mood swings and should support his wife in this critical phase of her life.

Spend more time with your wife

Spending more quality time with your wife during her pregnancy will help you understand the mood changes that occur along with the physical changes.  This will help you know how to support her during her mood swings.

Encourage your wife to do some pregnancy exercises

The exercises will help her overcome the depression and other mood changes that occur during pregnancy.  By getting into exercise programs fro pregnant women, she will feel good about herself and will prepare her body for giving birth.  You may ask for the help of her obstetrician to know the precautions regarding doing exercises during each pregnancy period.

Ask her to take some rest

Sometimes, pregnancy mood swings are due to the stress in the surroundings.  Advise your wife to take a nap and get plenty of sleep.  You may also purchase music that will help her relax her mind and her body.  If you wife enjoys reading, get her a relaxing book or magazine that she can browse while she lounges on the couch.

Psychotherapy

This treatment may be necessary especially when the wife experiences depression during pregnancy.  This mood is not healthy for the mother and the baby.  Aside from hormonal changes, depression may also be due to pregnancy-related stress and other problems.

It will help greatly if the husband comes with his wife as they consult a medical practitioner.  While counseling and other non-drug therapies can help in treating depression, there are times that the doctor has to prescribe medications for depression.

Pregnant women need a lot of understanding during this phase of their life.  As we expect that she will have mood swings, we should also know how to handle her mood changes.  With the proper knowledge on how to deal with the physical and emotional changes during pregnancy, husbands will be better able to support their wives as she prepares to give birth to another member of their family.

Mood swings are normal in pregnancy. It is due to the effect of hormones and the emotional stress associated to it. Pregnant women become depress and insecure because of the physical change they acquire in pregnancy that is why they end up having mood swings. As the husband, we are obligated to deal with our pregnant wives and be here with them in this stressful part of their lives. We can minimize the occurrence of pregnancy related mood swings by making our wife feel that she is important and that we are proud of her. Stay home and spend time with her as often as possible to ease her mind and avoid insecurities and doubts. Always tell her that she is beautiful even if she is pregnant even though she is not. Always be sweet to her and make her feel the love you have for her. Through these little ways, you can minimize mood swings.
