How to deal with Communicating with People who are Non-English Speakers in Your Vacation Overseas
The best thing about traveling overseas for a vacation is not just about getting the chance to see beautiful sceneries and having the opportunity to experience new things. One of the perks of going on a vacation to other countries is getting the chance to meet other people and learn about their interesting culture. However, this can also have lots of difficulties, especially if you don’t know how to speak their language, or if they don’t know how to communicate through the English language.
Learn the basics of their language.
Before your trip, you can study the basics of the language used in your country of destination. There are lots of ways to do this. You can, for instance, enroll in basic language courses. Lots of schools offer crash language courses. Aside from this, you can buy a travel dictionary. This book is really helpful because it contains information about things that you will encounter as a tourist in a specific destination.
Research.
Before you head off to a particular overseas destination, it pays to do a bit of research about the culture and tradition of the people in that place. You should find information about the things that are restricted in that place. It is also an advantage if you learn a few things about the sensitivity of the local people. In this way, you will be able to know how to approach the people there. If you are going to Japan, for instance, it would not be very ideal to greet your a friend there the way you would if you are in France. In the former, you have to maintain your distance, while you can give kisses on both cheeks when you visit the latter.
Studying the language, no matter how basic, and learning a lot of things about different cultures will level up the fun and experience you will get from your vacation overseas. Through these tips, you will be able to understand and appreciate the unique things other cultures can offer.

I also had that dilemma when we went to Hongkong. Since most of the folks don’t really speak english, it’s really a big problem for us on how to communicate with them. It really helped a lot that we had researched so many info about the place and the people. I printed maps of the place such as from the airport to hotel and to other destinations. I already visited websites and ask people on how can i go to a particular place that I want to go and how much is the fare and what to ride. i also studied basic words that they use such as ni hao ma which means hello or how are you xie xie which means thank you and bú shì when you want to say no. It will really help a lot if you also plan where you will go than think just when you’re already there. Our printed maps of the hotel and places really helped a lot when we ride the taxi since most of them don’t read english words.
