How to Deal with Sugar Addiction

Share

Much has been said about sugar addiction in the media, and some studies on animals indicate that excessive sugar intake does promote addictive behavior.  Another study also indicates that the effect of sugar addiction is even stronger than cocaine in rats.  Though no conclusive studies on humans have been done, these previous researches establish the possible addicting influence of sugar.

When too much sweet treats is just too much

Typical of addictions, signs of sugar addiction are excessive intake of sweet or sugary foods, compulsion to eat them, and even possible withdrawal symptoms when deprived of sweet treats.  Of course, this should be at an alarming rate and not just your normal case of having a “sweet tooth.”

Addiction to sugary foods and obesity

There is a close link between carbohydrates, which is what sugar is, and obesity.  Thus, with the increase of sugar intake, one also increases the risk of obesity.  And with obesity, you have diseases that come along with it, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney failure, and cardiac diseases.  Psychologically, it may induce low self-esteem and depression due to     social pressure placed on “fat” being unattractive.

Dealing with addiction to sugary foods

As with any case of addiction, one should persuade the person to seek medical help.  One can go to a health professional to further understand the dangers of sugar addiction and obesity, and get the necessary treatment.  One can also seek advice from therapists and nutritionists to change eating patterns and behavior to curb sugar cravings.

Emotional problems as possible causes

As sugar can release opioids and dopamine in the brain, it becomes a reward system for the body.  Basically, sugar makes one feel good, or “high.” So if one is sad, depressed, or angry, one may depend on sugar to pick one up from these situations.  And as research on animals suggests, the body can build a form of dependence on sugar.  Though not a lot of studies have been directed at sugar specifically, comfort eating has been seen as a cause for obesity and overeating.

Sugar addiction, like all addictions, is a medical disorder, and thus needs to be treated by a professional.  When one shows signs of addiction and withdrawal symptoms, one should seek medical help.  Aside from that, the one suffering should also receive a lot of support to get him or her through the addiction and be treated successfully.
