Losing your passport and other travel documents in a foreign country is a dreadful experience.  But you should not panic when this happens because there are lots of ways to effectively deal with it.

Just relax and be cool.

It is well-known that losing your passport is a terrifying experience, but being terrified will do you no good.  So before you do any moves to get the immediate solution for this, just relax first.  In this way, you can be more systematic in dealing with your problem.

Find the nearest local embassy or consulate.

Once you discover that your passport and travel documents are missing, just proceed immediately to the nearest consulate or embassy.  This way, you can instantly start the process for acquiring a temporary passport.

Know the hotline numbers.

In your travels, you should be aware about the hotline numbers of travel agencies and embassies.  Having a copy of the hotline numbers will provide you with easier access to their offices in case you want to ask anything about your lost passport or when following up your application for a temporary passport.

Prove your identity.

Before proceeding into an embassy or consulate, you should have your proofs of identity ready so they can issue you a temporary passport.
It is best if you have a copy of your passport details kept in a separate place, which include your full name, date and place of birth, passport number, and date and place of issue.  In this way, it will be easier for them to verify your details at the embassy.  In certain circumstances, you may have someone from your home email or fax you some of your documents for identification such as your birth certificate, marriage contract, or any document that can prove your identity.  This is why it is a nice idea to leave copies of these documents to your family or to your friends back home.  Better yet, you can make electronic copies of these documents by scanning them and saving these files in your emails to avoid costly overseas transactions.  If there are no other problems with your documents, the process will be smooth and easy.
