Like any other addiction, work addiction is unhealthy.  The term “workaholic” is also used to refer to those whose addiction pertains to work and career.  Usually, a person who has addiction to work believes that there is no one other than himself or herself who can do a certain task well.  The work addict may also feel that he or she is unworthy or a total failure if he or she failed to do a specific task.  If you have an officemate who has an addiction to work, you should be concerned because this person does not have a healthy lifestyle.

Knowing the signs of work addiction

There are various signs that you have to watch out for in order to know if your officemate is suffering from work addiction.  One of these is when he or she does not have an active social life, and all he or she can think about 24/7 is work.  If work takes precedence over leisure and family most of the time, then the said person is work addicted.  You will also see the signs of the addiction when that certain person never goes on a vacation, or if ever he or she takes a vacation, he or she brings work.

Effects of work addiction on other aspects of life

Just like other types of addiction, an addiction to work also has negative effects on one’s health.  Because of too much hard work, that person is prone to over-fatigue and stress.  In some cases, this may lead to serious stress-induced diseases such as asthma, digestive disorders, and even heart diseases.  The lack of social life may also lead to emotional imbalances such as depression.

Dealing with an officemate who has work addiction

You have to approach your officemate with work addiction carefully.  You have to make sure that you do not offend him or her by appearing to be a know-it-all and meddlesome person. Just show him or her that you are concerned about his or her health. You can also advise him or her to slow down and take a break, or better yet, ask him or her if she wants to go out with you sometimes.

But if your officemate didn’t heed your advice and still goes on with an unhealthy lifestyle, you can let the supervisor know about the situation of your officemate.  It’s all right to do this, especially if you can see that your officemate’s health is at risk.
