Proper child nutrition is important as kids who eat healthy will also stay healthy. Poor eating habits, such as too much munching on junk food, expose children to many risks, among them are obesity and diabetes. But there are ways on how to develop healthy eating habits in your children, and help them kick the junk food habit.

Lead the pack

You know what they say about leadership through example? That is particularly true with you and your kids. Your kids won’t stop eating junk food if you love to eat junk food yourself. Making your kids stop would require a change in eating habits not just for the kids but for you as the parent as well. Kids are more likely to follow suit if you, the adult, are also eat healthy.

Look for alternatives

The appeal of junk food is that they are tasty. What you can do is offer healthy and equally tasty alternatives to junk food. You can go for whole-grain snacks, select sugar-free and fat-free milk and yogurt. Instead of soft drinks or sodas, try making smoothies or shakes. For sweets, you can offer fruits as alternatives. You can also introduce snacking on vegetables and fruits to your kids by offering it to them. Even if they don’t eat them at first, they’ll grow to love it. So, patience is the key. It doesn’t hurt if you snack on them yourself.

Let them make their own snacks

If you involve children in making their own snacks, they are more likely to eat them. So, when you prepare healthy dishes, let the children help out. Let them have a say on what will go on the dish. Also, it doesn’t hurt to have fun while preparing food. You can include play when cooking. For example, let your children make their own cookie shapes, or play games using healthy snacks as penalties or prizes.

There are ways to keep kids from junk food. But as the adult and the parent, you have to take the active leadership role. As kids look up to you as the role model, you must live up to the role. Otherwise, kids will just see you as a tyrant who only tells them what to do and eat. Also remember that it will take time. As eating junk food was developed over time, healthy eating habits are the same. Just be patient and wait for the fruits of your efforts and labor.

As a parent, we have to balance our children’s happiness and what we think is the right thing for them. A little junk food won’t hurt but too much is bad. One way to prevent your kids from eating junk food is not to include these types of food in your grocery list. Instead, put healthy food and fruits in your storage so when every time they feel like eating and they check out the storage, they will be forced to eat what you have stored and will forget junk food. Another way is to become a strict authoritarian, you must show to them that eating junk food is bad and you don’t want them eating it. If incase they break your rule, then scold them so they won’t do it again. Sometimes, being strict makes other people better as a person and you always want your child to be a better person.

Junk foods have now become part of children’s everyday diet. Most of the time, they even constitute most of what’s in a meal. Junk food doesn’t necessarily refer to a mixture of flour and other ingredients, fried and spiced and then sealed in packs. Any type of food with too much additives, which has gone through several processes, and doesn’t contain the proper nutritional amounts needed for the body can be considered junk. These not only includes chips and candies but even fastfood items which are packed with so much fat, salt and sugar, thus contributing to a growing number in cases of childhood obesity. It is a common knowledge to everyone that these types of foods are no good for the body, but we keep eating them anyway because it makes us feel good. For kids, healthy = boring. They must be taught that eating nutritious foods is not only good for their body but it can be fun. Involve them in food preparations and let them do simple tasks; that way they’d be glad to contribute in making their own food and it might make the foods seem more interesting and appealing. Presentation is also very important, because we eat with our eyes first. Learn how to use it to your advantage, mix brightly colored fruits and vegetables and cut them in interesting shapes and sizes. How food looks like could be the determining factor if the child is going to eat it or not. An initiative must start from the parents if they want their children to quit unhealthy eating habits.

Well I don’t any have kids yet just like the post said, “leadership by example” you should be a role model for your kids if you really wanted them to be healthy. You as a parent should mold your children to be disciplined in their eating habits. On an early age you should always teach them the importance of good nutrition. Encourage them not to eat junk foods. It is very hard these days to monitor our kids every time especially when they are in school or outside because influences are very hard to resist, nevertheless, you as a parent must teach them or control them if they go over board.

There are many tips to actually help your children resort from eating junk food. I suggest you always see to it that the food you prepare is appealing to their senses. You should also prepare some healthy snacks during the afternoon to refrain them from eating junk foods. Give them packed lunch and not money because this will only let them buy junk food.

Always check your child’s eating habits train them to be responsible in the actions and definitely this would actually help your children.
