Getting over Depression when Newly Unemployed
With the increasing unemployment rates throughout the world, the number of unemployed people suffering from depression is consequently increasing. If you are recently unemployed, how can you get over depression? In the United States, unemployment rates rose to 9.5% in June 2009. Many people have lost jobs. It is rather unfortunate if you were one of the newly unemployed. And definitely, you may already be experiencing depression. If so, how do you fight depression?
Losing your job
Losing your job is difficult. In fact, studies show that depression is higher among unemployed people than employed ones. Instead of wallowing in your depression, accept the fact that you lost your job. You can look into applying for unemployment benefits if you were terminated through no fault of yours.
Don’t blame yourself – it’s beyond your control
After losing a job, you may find yourself looking for something or someone to blame. And most of the time, you end up blaming yourself. Stop doing that because it is futile. You lost your job through no fault of yours. It was definitely beyond your control. Besides, you are not the only person who is unemployed. Or this may not be the first time that you find yourself in this situation. Think of happy and positive things. A positive outlook in life will help a lot in getting over depression.
Don’t dwell on the past
If you keep dwelling on the past, where will it take you? Just like blaming yourself, dwelling on the past is futile. Instead of thinking what was, you must think of what will be. Focus your attention on the opportunities that lie ahead. The future is bright and hopeful. But that won’t happen if you keep yourself in the past. Be filled with hope because that is an important ingredient in getting out of depression.
Be active
Blaming yourself and dwelling on the past will make you unproductive and feeling more and more depressed. Get over your depression by being active in so many ways. First, look at the different job opportunities out there waiting for you. Step up your job search by going online. You can even read about many resources in finding a job. But do not spend the entire day job hunting. You also need to rest and enjoy some free time with family and friends.
Spending time for your self is also important. You can do a lot of things to pamper and rejuvenate yourself. You can go to a salon, meditate, read a book, exercise, watch a movie, and so on. The choices are endless. Use your free time to rest, or go out with family and friends. Whatever you do, make sure to have fun. Stop worrying and look for productive and fulfilling ways to channel your creativity and free time into something you enjoy. Always think positive and be hopeful of the future. Before you know it, you already feel happy in spite of being unemployed. And with hope and faith in your heart, finding a job becomes easier.
