The second most commonly used illegal drug in the US is cocaine.  Actually, recent statistics show that more than 14% or roughly 34 million Americans age 12 and above have tried cocaine.  Because of this, it is not so surprising anymore if you see one of your schoolmates trying cocaine.  Like many other illegal drugs, cocaine results to the user’s dependency to it.  And like any other type of drug abuse, the use of cocaine will put the health of the user at risk.  This is why having someone you know get addicted to it is alarming.

People use cocaine because it is a stimulant.  This substance is associated with the brain’s nucleus accumbens.  Several studies show that pleasurable stimulus brought by sex, eating chocolate, and using drugs activate this area of the brain.  This is why this area is called the brain’s pleasure center.

Letting your schoolmate’s parents know about his or her condition

Cocaine addiction is a serious case; this is why you really have to let your schoolmate’s parents know what your schoolmate is up to.   It is important to let the parents know so they can find way to stop their child’s addiction to cocaine as early as possible.

Dealing with a schoolmate who has cocaine addiction

It is not easy to deal with a schoolmate who has an addiction to cocaine.  Just like when someone takes marijuana and other anti-depressants, when someone takes cocaine, his or her thought processes and behavior are altered.  The user feels high, and of course, dealing with a person who is high on drugs is difficult.  You have to be very patient when you deal with that person.  You have to understand that person and try to know the reasons why he or she resorts to cocaine addiction.  If you understand him or her, you will know how to approach that person.

Helping a schoolmate deal with his or her addiction

One of the ways to help your schoolmate overcome his or her addiction is to show your schoolmate that you understand him or her, and that you are willing to support him or her in overcoming the addiction.  You have to understand too that your schoolmate’s addiction is not easy to stop.  An addict develops tolerance or sensitization to cocaine.  Aside from this, the user feels “low” if he or she failed to take cocaine.  This is why he or she feels the urge to use it again and again; the user’s brain is already altered that it is now quite difficult for him or her to quit using cocaine.

Rehabilitation is one of the means to help your schoolmate overcome his or her addiction.  You can help your schoolmate handle rehab by encouraging him or her to go on and combat his or her addiction.  You have to make your schoolmate understand that this is for his or her welfare.
