Dealing with Sleeping Pills Addiction

Share

Sleeping pills or sedatives are great medication for people with sleeping and anxiety disorders.  The problem is these pills are also liable to become objects for substance abuse, with some people who use them displaying an addiction to sleeping pills.  Though there is that danger, sleeping pill addiction can be treated.

How does one become a sleeping pill junkie?

The easiest way to develop an addiction to sleeping pills is through prolonged use.  As people depend on the sleeping pill, the body develops a need for it, displaying withdrawal symptoms should the intake of the sedatives suddenly stops.  Another way people become addictive is when people overdose and get hooked on the calming effects of the drug.  Some people also use sleeping pills with stimulants and other addictive substances to retard the effects of those drugs.

Effects of too much sleeping pills

As mentioned, one of the effects is the body developing a dependence on the drug.  Aside from the withdrawal symptoms, the body gets used to the drug that normal dosages would have to be increased to get the desired effect.  This will lead to possible overdose and addiction.  Aside from that, seizures also occur on people who stopped taking sleeping pills.

Dealing with addiction to sleeping pills

Sleeping pill addiction is a medical condition.  Thus, one needs to consult a medical professional and therapist.  Some of the solutions would be to find alternatives to sleeping pills, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and abstinence from taking the pills.  To get the right treatment, one should consult a doctor or a psychologist.

Practical tips in getting a good night’s sleep without resorting to pills

To get rid of the pill, one can try to adopt sleep hygiene practices.  Sleep at the same time, and wake up at the same time.  Make sure that your sleeping area is dark and comfortable.  Avoid physical activity and large meals before bedtime.  And stay away from caffeine and other stimulants a few hours before sleeping.  These can help you create good sleeping habits and lessen dependence on sleeping pills.

Sleeping pill addiction is a curable condition

If you’re hooked to sleeping pills, you can still treat the situation.  With the advice and treatment from a medical professional, you can kick out your dependence on sleeping pills.  Just remember that it also depends on your willpower and discipline; no treatment method will work if you won’t follow it.
