Dealing with a Relative’s Gambling Addiction
If you notice that a relative is constantly fixated on gambling, there is a chance that he or she is suffering from a gambling addiction. This means that he or she is constantly reliving past gambling experiences, and fantasizing about the highs that it gave him or her. Another sign of gambling addiction is a very physical one, meaning that your relative experiences actual effects on his or her body, such as an increase in heart rate or a sudden mental disconnection from reality. Finally, another obvious sign of
gambling addiction is alienation from the real world, which includes a disinterest in current affairs and events, as well as a disinterest in keeping his or her relationships in life.
Effects of gambling addiction to finances
Since gambling is basically a game of chance, it makes people feel as though they always have hope in life. Whether it be hope for a better future, hope for a new car, or simply hope for becoming wealthy, this sense of hope makes gambling addicts courageous enough to go so far as to sell their possessions. Most of the time, when gambling addicts lose all of their savings, they begin to sell their belongings in order to gamble. This is a major problem for many addicts, as well as for their family and loved ones.
Dealing with a relative who has addiction to gambling
Before a gambling addict can be helped, he or she must acknowledge that he or she is really an addict. Once he or she recognizes and acknowledges this fact, there are many ways to deal with and help him or her. One of these ways is by asking your relative to regain interest in his or her job.
Oftentimes, gambling addicts believe that it is easier to gain money through gambling than through working. However, as we all know, finding the right job is always the best and safest way to earn money.
Ways to avoid getting tempted to gamble
To avoid the temptation of gambling, remind your relative why his or her job is better than his or her gambling. Ask him or her if he or she is willing to one day lose all of his or her money, possessions, and even loved ones. Make it clear that you are offering your help because you sincerely care for his or her welfare. Finally, keep your relative away from casinos and other means of gambling. Also be sure that he or she does not deal with friends or relatives who might be addicted to gambling as well.
