Shoplifting is considered a sport among young people, especially teens, and is considered as a dare, or part of some initiation to a clique or group.  But  epending on the underlying causes, shoplifting can easily become an addiction, when it’s a mental disorder such as kleptomania.

Possible motivations behind such behaviors

Not all shoplifting addiction is caused by financial hardships.  Actually, only a small percentage of shoplifting cases were done out of economic necessity and hardship.  Most of the cases are done usually on a whim, as a prank, or as something that can give the adrenaline rush from doing something illegal and not getting caught.  One can also cite peer pressure as another cause for shoplifting and the latter addiction to it.  Then you also have the mental disorder kleptomania, where one can’t help oneself but steal.  One or a combination of these reasons may form the basis of the shoplifting addiction.

Dealing with someone who has shoplifting addiction

One has to confront the person about the behavior and state that it’s not right.  One can discuss with him or her the possible motivations for shoplifting and address those reasons accordingly.  One can also cite possible negative outcomes when caught shoplifting, such as having a criminal record or being put in jail.  You can also seek the help of other friends and family to help the person through his or her shoplifting addiction.  One should also have the person with the addiction diagnosed by a mental health officer for any case of mental disorder that might be the underlying cause for his or her behavior.

Helping your friend overcome his or her addiction by letting him or her understand possible causes

If it’s just a matter of social or peer pressure,  one can talk one’s friend out of hanging with that group of people.  If it’s just for the thrill, one should point out the serious consequences of being caught.  One can also suggest going through therapy to curb his or her stealing impulses.

Shoplifting can be successfully cured

Shoplifting addiction has different possible causes, but if one is able to determine what the cause is, stopping the addiction is manageable.  Whether it’s due to social pressure, the thrill of shoplifting, or a mental disorder, you are not powerless.  There are ways to deal with those causes; shoplifting addiction is a condition that can be cured successfully.
