How to Deal with Negative Criticism About Your Work
Criticism at work is natural. You are not perfect; you make mistakes. But then again, there are criticisms that are constructive and help you learn from your mistakes. And, there are also criticisms that don’t really help in any way. These criticisms are negative and destructive. Instead of setting you up towards the correct path, these types of criticisms render you immobile with reduced self-esteem, fear of ineffectiveness, and maybe even some psychological damages. And, like it or not, negative criticisms will come your way. Here’s how to shield yourself from and cope with not-so-nice remarks.
Turn the bad into good
This is easier said than done, of course. Your boss or colleague may not be the most diplomatic people around. They may say things in ways that can hurt your ego and feelings, and can harm your self-esteem. It is up to you to look beyond that. What you hear may hurt you but you need to listen beyond what is heard. What are they really saying? What issues are they bringing up and how can you change the way you handle these issues? There is often a basis to criticism, and it is up to us to see it and do something about it.
Toughen up
Harsh words may be said. Insults might be made. People are people and you can’t really control their tempers or the words they choose to use. What you can control however is how you receive their words. Maybe, all you need is a little toughening up to get going and begin to deal with all the negativity of these people. Just assure yourself of your worth and the value that you give to your company, and you’d do alright.
Keep a positive outlook
Nothing pisses off a harsh critic more than a positive response to his or her criticisms. Don’t allow yourself to go down to their level and wallow in meanness and ill-feelings. You are better than that. Take everything in stride and move forward. There are other projects and other opportunities to improve yourself. Take what you can from their criticism and be better next time. But never ever let them get you down.
Criticisms, at the very basic, are helpful. Yet, it sometimes feels like you need an iron skin to be able to take them. Just realize what they’re there for and remain true to yourself and what you set out to do.
