During tough economic times, it’s understandable that businesses are looking to save and make slashes on the company budget. It may mean lesser resources allocated for technology and training, and, worse, it could also mean a loss of jobs. Here are ways on how to deal with company budget cuts and protect yourself from them.

Prove your worth

As you hear news of layoffs more and more, it’s essential that you ensure that your job is secure. You can do this by making sure that all the tasks assigned to you are completed and that your boss knows it. You should make it clear to management that you are an asset to the company and that you need to stay. If you are the manager, try to get as much information as possible about the budget cuts the company is planning. Talk with the CEO or CFO about the details of the budget and see if your department is affected. If your department is greatly affected, discuss the points where the budget cuts are made and explain the value of your department why it needs its current resources. When explaining your reasons, make sure to explain how the company will benefit from not cutting your resources, such as increased revenue, streamlined work process and increased output. And if the cuts are unavoidable, try to lessen the impact by asking that the cut be done in increments and not just in one go. This will make it easier for staff to take in and not leave them shell-shocked.

Keep morale high

Happy workers make better workers. If you’re grumpy and complaining all the time, you might be the next one to go. Look for opportunities instead of just complaining. If you’re the manager and supervisor, it’s time to assure your people of their jobs’ security. Also, explain why the budget cuts are made. You can also make non-monetary rewards to employees such as “thank you” notes, or just by simply saying they did a great job. As people are already bummed out because of the decreased privileges and aborted bonuses, you’ve got to do your best to keep motivation high even through simple gestures.

Though budget cuts are inevitable when the world is having hard financial times, there are ways to protect yourself from them. What you need to do is to prove that you’re worth keeping and to maintain a positive outlook. Many people feel downhearted whenever there are budget cuts in their office. What you can do is do your best to remain productive despite the financial setbacks.

Implementing changes in the workplace is so hard to deal with especially when people tend to have a high expectation in the organization. Well, for me, this requires proper communication and cooperation with all the people concern in the workplace. On the management side, they need to dissemenate information to their subordinates the need to do some cost cutting procedures within the organization. While on the employees side, once that management tells them about the budget thing that they need to do..employees should have a sense of responsibility and needs to cooperate with their management for them to attain their common goal. Some of the companies, instead of reducing people in the organization, they just tend to do cost cutting to be able to cope up with economic crisis…There are many ways of budget cuts that a company could do…the easiest thing is the office supplies. Office supplies can be bought in bulk orders to have a free shipment or look for generic brands at affordable prices. They can reduce the use of paper in the office..instead of using new bond paper for photo copy thing, they can use the back of old bond papers that is not needed anymore. Leasing of some office equipments, like fax, photo copy, computers is good because it has a maintenance free, and all other things..All of these cost cutting will be successful if the employees within the organization will help management about it. Worst thing here is lay offs, when employee feels that there will be a layoff in the organization as part of budget cost. As an employee, dont get absent or late coming to work. Do all the needed reports and info needed by your boss. Work well, and your boss need to feel that you are worth keeping for….
