How to Deal with a Very Demanding (and sometimes) Insensitive Boss

Share

If you work in an office or even as a freelance employee, you will normally have to report to someone – your boss. A boss is often alright. He or she asks you to do work, supervises your every move, and praises or criticizes you when necessary. That’s all part of the job. However, there are bosses who seem to have been sent from hell. These bosses are very demanding and downright insensitive to your life outside work. Just how do you deal with these types of bosses? Well, before you consider anything drastic, there are things you can try to keep in mind. These may help you cope with your current reality in a more constructive manner.

Accept it

Sometimes, all you may need to do is accept your reality at work. A demanding boss is a demanding boss; and normally, you can’t do anything about that. It often becomes easier once you accept this as reality. Being demanding may just be the boss’s management style. Once you stop being resistant and defiant to this, things might change around the office.

Do not take it personally

You may make the mistake of taking your boss’s demanding attitude and insensitivity personally. These traits can admittedly hurt the ego. However, it is best to remember that your boss is that way with everyone else in the office. He or she does not single you out when it comes to being overly bossy. So, don’t take it personally. Your boss is just being who he or she is.

Keep in mind that the boss stays in the office

Sometimes, we can forget boundaries that are naturally there; and bring our work – and the boss – home. Remember that the boss stays in the office and that’s the only place where he or she is allowed to affect the way you live your life. There are limitations to his or her being a boss. In reality, he or she is just another person, doing his or her job, just like you.

Respect your boss

Sometimes, we can forget that bosses also came from somewhere; and are dealing with their own work reality and their own bosses. A healthy level of respect is called for. The boss is just someone like you who has worked upwards the corporate ladder. He or she is probably good and knowledgeable about the work and the industry you belong to. Likewise, he or she has put in hours of hard work too in order to reach his or her current status.

Always keep in mind that no matter what, your work and career progress are your responsibilities. Regardless of what kind of boss you have, you owe it to yourself to perform well and be the best that you can be at work.
