A job layoff is one of the harder work realities that we have to deal with. Especially now, when the economic crisis is forcing companies to close up shop, it is best to know how to handle a job layoff.

Take time to breathe and then get ready to go again.

The blow from a job layoff can be expected or it can come as a surprise. Whatever the case, it is important to take time first and accept the new reality. You owe yourself a breather. Take a day or two for yourself. You can use this time to allow your emotions to come to fore. Recognize them for what they are, and return to your new reality. Hard, unsure times are natural in a person’s life. All things will pass.

Step into crisis mode.

There are certain tasks that you need to deal with immediately when you’ve been laid off.  First of all, you need to secure yourself. Immediately head out to your state’s unemployment office to apply for assistance. There, you will see the type of aid that you’re qualified for. Your local unemployment office will also be able to provide help in your job hunt. Crisis mode also requires for you to cut back. This is the time to tighten the belt a little and think about securing your future. To do this, start with a list of regular expenditures. Map out how you can cut down on your spending for these expenses. This can be as simple as staying in for dinners for now, or lessening the use of lighting fixtures at your home. Remember that a little bit here and there can sum up to a sizable amount of savings.

Get going.

The next steps require for you to rev up the action. Get online and research your options. Update your resume and post this on the many job market sites online. You can opt for the traditional job sites. You can also check out sites that specifically offer local listings and freelance work opportunities. One of the immediate things that you also need to take care of is your health insurance. You typically have several weeks to sign on to the insurance plan that you got through your former employer, or you can opt to go for another company.

Overall, it is alright to feel down and depressed at the start. But later on, be assured that you will find the job opportunity that’s suited for you.
