How to Deal With a Career Change in Your 40s
Harder times have forced many to shift careers, even when in their 40s. This is contrary to the ideal, when people at this age are already in the peaks of their work life. This is the time to have settled down and working for a hefty retirement fund. But things are different now. With the economic crisis looming over our heads, we have to do what we have to do.
The new work environment
An initial reaction to a change late in one’s career is insecurity. So many things are different since the time you first entered the workforce. The Internet boom has redefined how companies and employees deal with work that needs to be done. The market for professionals is now global. You are competing with almost everyone else in the world who have similar educational backgrounds and experiences as yours.
It is understandable to feel a bit intimidated but you can keep things together. There is an innate value to all that you’ve been through as an employee. You should realize your value and hold on to this realization as you seek better career opportunities. The changed work environment is not an excuse for you to be self-critical. If anything, this new environment is brimming with opportunities that were once removed from your grasps. Now, as you reenter the job market, always remind yourself that you have something good and valuable to offer.
Time to adjust
A career change is never easy and it is important that you allow yourself some time to transition. Deal with yourself first, and all that you feel about your situation. It is normal to feel fear and to be hesitant. When you acknowledge these feelings, it gets easier to picks thing up and get back on track. Use this time to explore your possibilities. Research career tracks that you’re interested in and are best qualified for. There are several resources on the Internet to help you with this. The idea is to get enough knowledge and information to power your steps ahead. Doing your own research is actually very critical. When you get out there, you’ll realize how much possibilities there are for you.
Facing your fear
For most people, fear is what’s stopping them from moving on and moving forward. When you realize your value as an employee, you can peel off strips of this fear, and stand tall and proud of all that you’ve achieved.
Facing a new career in your 40s is definitely a challenging task. But, if you keep these tips in mind, you’ll be able to make a smooth transition into your new career.
