Worried About Losing Your Job to Outsourcing?
These days more and more companies are transferring their jobs to other countries for cheaper labor costs, resulting in loss of jobs at home. Outsourcing, despite being seen as one of the answers to the struggling US economy is also seen as a source of heartbreak and anxiety for most American families who see family members getting laid off week after week, despite the fact that layoffs and displacement are not personal but simply the effects of the laws of commerce.
In spite of the increasing trends toward outsourcing, there are some things you can do to help yourself if ever that time comes.
Outsourceable skills vs. non-outsourceable skills
Having the advantage of non-outsourceable skills will make you less dispensable. This make focusing on enhancing your skills, whether it’s a managerial position or as an expert in your field, a probable tool in ensuring that you do not get thrown out in the event that your company decides to outsource.
Knowing what your employers need or what it needed to improve sales, boost profits, and other things to contribute to your company is one way of keeping your job. This could get you noticed by your boss and possibly lead to a promotion to a position where you will longer be in danger of losing your job when drastic cuts need to be made. Focusing on the customer, anticipating their needs, both internal and external, will prove you relevance to your job and your company, showing your boss that you can make indispensable contributions.
There are also signs for possible change or lay-off that you should take note of. These include change in your duties or cutting your hours. Learning what is happening in your company can alert you of possible changes that could affect you. The sooner you know, the sooner you can take steps to ensure that your job stays with you, or the sooner you can start looking for another job.
Upgrading your skills set by taking an advanced course or training
One way to keep your job is to upgrade your skills on a regular basis. Joining trainings and seminars is one is one way to let your employers know that your skills and abilities are up-to-date, making you less easier to let go. Learning leadership skills will make you a good candidate for a managerial position, something that is not easily seen as an outsourceable skill.
Becoming an adept multi-tasker
Learning how to do a couple of things at once is a good skill that you must master if you want to be noticed as an employee with a non-outsourceable skill. Multi-tasking can be a great tool if your company reaches a point when various positions need to be dissolved. If you can handle one job while doing another, you give off the impression that you can do the job of two people at one time, making you an important player that they will be hard-pressed to let go.
Outsourcing is seen as a threat to the local economy. But as long as you play your cards right, keep your skills up to date, and show that you are an employee who can make valuable contributions to the company, you are ensuring a certain degree of safety if and when outsourcing becomes a necessity for your company.
