Recession-proof Your House Budget
Make your budget immune against recession by calculating your fixed costs and by identifying how much you need monthly for your basic needs, mortgages, basic utility bills, and credit card minimum due payments. Once you’ve computed how much you need to have to get by, you can focus next on declining, if not totally diminishing, lavishness and extravagant spending like eating out and watching movies every week. Always put away any extra money for future emergencies. You can always start by saving small amounts of money. By having enough savings, you will always have a little extra stashed away in the bank in times of recession. And more importantly, do away with debt. The less debt you have to worry about, the better off you are financially.
Getting smarter with your money
As we always say, cash is king. Stocking up on cash is the wisest thing one can do. You don’t have to be an economist to understand the effects that a recession brings. So, be smart with your money at all times. Spend wisely and list down your cash flow in your handy-dandy notebook, which you can bring with you at all times. That way, you would always know up to what amount you can spend for your basic needs, utilities, mortgages, and other miscellaneous expenses. At the same time, don’t forget to set a fixed amount for savings.
Pay your monthly bills first and avoid charging everything on credit cards
Make sure you always pay for your credit card minimum due payments; otherwise, the interests will accumulate and therefore your debts will pile up even more. It is very tempting to charge everything on your credit card but do not put yourself in a deep debt hole. It is very important that you keep good track of your finances. Calculate how much money you need to allocate for your basic needs, your mortgages, and savings if there’s some left. Finally, take a long look at your cash flow and see where else you can cut on spending, and which items you can and cannot charge on your credit card.
Opt for home-cooked meals and spend less on snacks
Opt for home-cooked meals especially during recession. Not only are they healthier, but they are also lighter on the pocket. In an economic downturn like what we’re experiencing now, it is best to cut on your extravagant spending which include dining out. Have a family dinner everyday with home-cooked meals, instead of dining out, so as to manage your money in a smarter way.
Save on energy
There are fewer jobs now since there are fewer companies and more job cuts. And so the best thing you may do is to decrease your expenses. Make money by saving and not spending so much. It is just a matter of discipline. Try your best to manage squeezing in all your expenses into one small budget and have some saved in the bank. In case you didn’t know yet, the biggest wastage that people throw their money on is electricity. Master the practice of saving energy. Really, you should not be paying more than what you just need. One effective way to save on energy is by changing the schedule of your laundry and your ironing. That way, the wattage will not be as high as when you do them both at the same time. Also try to watch less TV as your TV watching habits can add up on your electricity bill.
