In an economic recession, lay-offs, freeze hiring, and downsizing are all part of a stressful work condition.  Surviving this ordeal is the name of the game.  You must master the art of acting like a survivor, on your guard at all times as far as your work is concerned.  Hold on to your job and strategize your professional moves to protect your career.  Here are some tips on how you could protect your job especially during recession.

It’s understandable how anxieties and worries affect the way you deal with your job; however, it’s very important to always stay determined and positive.  Believe that you won’t be laid-off; or if it should happen, believe that you will always land a better job, and that you’ll never worry about paying your financial obligations and your basic needs for the month.  All it takes to protect your job is to stay focused, and prove that you are a valuable asset of the company and that the work you contribute to the company is indispensable and valuable.

Recession-proof job strategies

The ultimate strategy during a recession is to stay calm and not make hasty decisions.  Be prepared and pro active at all times.  Here are some strategies to help you survive a difficult economic situation:

First, don’t ignore the grapevine.  It’s right to avoid the usual office gossiping, but being updated on real information that’s valuable to your career is much needed.  Second, your updated resume should always come in handy.  Tailor-fit your resume to whatever situation, or kind of employer it needs to adapt to.  Next is make a name for yourself for all the hard work you do for the company.  That way, the management perceives your value to their organization.  And lastly, focus on professional development opportunities wherein you continue to learn about your career, industry, or profession.  Always be on the cutting-edge of your career.

Show that you care and that you can show leadership and initiative to take on new tasks

Always show loyalty to the company, never forgetting to be competent in your work as well.  Show initiative by taking tasks that are not really assigned to you, but no one seems to be up on his or her toes to accept the job.  Your value will be much more appreciated through this.  Also, always show a sense of leadership by volunteering for projects that have relevance to your job, even if you are not asked to complete such projects.  Be known as an avid supporter of the management and as a follower of the directives of the organization.  This way, you’ll not only earn prestige for your company, but also for yourself as a competent professional as well.

Be indispensable by getting involved with company projects

To always have a good standing with your current employer, it is important that you make yourself work hard at making yourself indispensable.  Make sure you have such enviable strengths to make your group value you as an indispensable team leader.  All these boil down to one thing – that is, to take ownership of your responsibilities.  Because if you do so, you will be showing your employers that you have lots of potential.

Be an expert on your field and try to learn new skills

Invest in yourself and your career.  Don’t fail to take development courses and seminars to improve your professionalism; as well as taking on personal coaching or trainings to excel in your field.  Always try to learn new ideas.  Be innovative in everything you do for the company.  That way there will always be room for opportunities for you everywhere you go.
