Dealing with Your Company’s Impending Closure
With companies going bankrupt week after week, it is not an utter impossibility that your company is next in line for the chopping block soon. Downsizing, outsourcing, and other ways for companies to cut corners churn out hundreds of unemployed workers week after week, and this takes a toll not only on them but also on their families. The good news is that you can survive, as long as you know what to do, you trust in your skills, and you hunker down to do some serious job searching.
Get informed about the company status as well as Your rights and benefits during unemployment.
The worst thing you can do is remain ignorant of your benefits and rights during unemployment period. Most companies are required to provide benefits to workers who become unemployed through no fault of their own. This means that only those who got laid off from their jobs are eligible for benefits. If you belong to this category, fight for your benifits, as these can help foot the bills while you look for a job.
Know how you should spend your money.
Even before you see signs of economic uncertainty, knowing how to spend your money wisely is one way you can do to help build your savings to help you brave periods when no regular income is coming your way.
Make a list of your needs and priorities and tailor your budget according to your needs, saving your money for the basics. Know that without a steady source of income you will need to forgo some of the luxuries that you enjoyed before, such as dinners out, fancy vacations, or that second cup of latte during the break.
Make a list of available job options for you.
No matter how depressing things seem right now, there are jobs available for you, even if they’re not anything like your previous job. Change your perspective and look for jobs according to your skills, not only on your experience. The list is endless if you set your sights in a temporary part-time job while you spend the rest of the day looking for a more permanent one. This is often the best choice if you a see your savings rapidly dwindling as the days go by or if unemployment benefits are slowly running out.
Be active with your job search, or make money through freelance jobs, garage sales, etc.
After allowing yourself to recover from the initial blow, now comes the time to face the cold hard truth: you are out of a job and you better start pounding the pavement soon. Adopt a positive attitude and be serious about your job search. Be ready for rejections but do not let that faze you. In these tough economic times, everyone’s out looking for a job, and you have a lot of competition. However, you have an advantage if you are out there pushing your resume while the others rest. Also, look for ways to earn money to tide you over. Clean the house and have a garage sale, accept freelance or consultancy jobs. These not only give you added income, they also act as profitable distractions to keep you from going on the downward spiral of depression that affects some when they lose the security of a job.
Downsizing, lay-offs, and company bankruptcies can leave workers without jobs, and their families facing uncertain futures. If you are one of these workers, there are some things you can do to brace yourself from the effects of a company closure. Filing for unemployment benifits, assessing your skills for alternative jobs, and looking for alternative sources of income while you do some serious job hunting are some of the ways you can do to help yourself survive from a commpany closure.
