Claims for Unemployment Benefits
With the economic recession affecting the world, you hear news of layoffs and companies closing. Job loss and unemployment statistics are on the rise. But you are not beyond help since you can claim for unemployment benefits from the state. These funds can help you stay afloat for a time until you find yourself back in the workforce.
How do you qualify for unemployment benefits?
If you have worked previously for a set time earning a certain wage, then you’re eligible for unemployment benefits. The requirement for most states in the US is that you should’ve worked the first four of the last five calendar quarters before you filed your claim. Either that or your wages should have met the set amount in the particular state that you are in.
Another important thing to note is that your employment’s termination should not be your fault. That is, it was not due to misconduct or any breach of the company codes or guidelines.
With that in mind, the rules and eligibility may differ from state to state. Some may have different standards than others, but what is certain is that all US states provide unemployment benefits to its citizens.
To apply for unemployment benefits, you must contact your local state unemployment insurance agency. There, you must file your claim and provide the necessary information, such as the dates when you were hired, addresses, and names of your employers. As these are important in determining your eligibility and the amount of benefits that you’ll get, be sure to make the information accurate. Depending on the state, you can file your claim either through phone or through their offices.
The processing time would be between 2-3 weeks, with some states having a one-week waiting period that is not covered by the benefits. Most states can provide unemployment benefits for up to 26 weeks, or 6 ½ months. There are some instances where the state can extend the financial assistance, but that would depend on the state regulations. The amount that you’ll receive will depend on your wage, length of time of your employment, and the state determinations.
Reminders
Remember that unemployment benefits are meant for you to pick yourself up. You will be required to undergo the career counseling services of the state to help you find employment. You will also be required to file in documents pertaining to your attempts to gain employment, and also the refusal slips that you may have received. Failing to do so may end your eligibility for financial assistance. Make sure that you follow the rules and deadlines to ensure continued financial assistance.
Losing a job is a terrible blow for anyone, financially and psychologically. But the good news is you’re not beyond help. You can get unemployment benefits to help you weather the storm and get yourself back on your feet. Through these benefits, you will get a load off your shoulders, so you could focus more on getting back to the workforce.
