Responding to Medical Emergencies even without Insurance
As unemployment rages on in the US, more and more people are losing their ability to afford medical insurance. However, sicknesses such as cancer, heart conditions, and other degenerative diseases don’t choose to afflict someone because of his or her employment status. If you’re one of the unfortunate thousands who are unemployed or cannot afford medical insurance, then you’re in a bind.
Immediate surgery and long-term hospitalization due to causes ranging from accidents to life-threatening diseases are a few of the top reasons why families and households in the US use up most of their savings or give up their properties. And since high premium costs and unemployment take away the insurance that could have helped soften the blow to the finances of a family, healthcare is one of the biggest issues at present.
Dealing with medical emergencies without an insurance
Ask for assistance from the state government
The US government has enacted a memorandum that helps uninsured children with their health and medical concerns. Ask for help from your county or state health office to avail of their free services.
Save and cut back on expenses
If you don’t have insurance, you better have substantial savings to sustain any medical emergencies. If you don’t make much to pay for monthly premiums, at least set aside a small amount for savings that you can dip into for medical emergencies. However, as soon as you make enough money, it’s advisable to get health insurance.
Choosing HMOs (health maintenance organizations) based on premium and coverage
However, be informed that most medical insurers are iffy when it comes to covering certain sicknesses. Make sure to choose your healthcare provider wisely based on the premiums and the coverage that they offer.
Insurance companies are also in hot water these days. Though getting health insurance is one way of ensuring you and your family’s health, setting aside some money for savings can be your safety net when medical emergencies arise.
