Credit Card Debt and Unemployment Issues

As of April 2009, a staggering 8.9% of the population are unemployed.  Unemployment takes away some or even almost all of the spending capabilities of individuals that they need to rely on credit cards and loans to survive for the time being.  Since recession hit the United States last December 2007, a lot of people have had a hard time finding enough resources to pay for their needs and their debts.  Credit card debt is on the rise as people turn to these little plastic cards for survival, but lack the resources to pay back their debts.  So how can you manage your debt when you virtually have no income?

Dealing with credit card debt when unemployed

Make the necessary lifestyle changes

One way to ensure that you can pay your debts is to change your lifestyle.  Let go of luxuries that aren’t vital to your household.  Instead of eating out, why not cook low-budget and healthy meals instead?

Prepare your budget and stick to it

Stretch your savings so you can cover your debts and other necessary bills by making a budget.  As much as possible, don’t go overboard when spending.  Try not to give in to the temptation of new gadgets and other baubles.

Declare bankruptcy

When the only things left to your name is a mountain of debts and no job prospect in sight, then it may be time to throw down the last card.  Chapter 7 and 13 bankruptcies are the government’s helping hands to people who are in deep financial trouble.  Though bankruptcies help shave off the bills and the debts, these stay in your record for a long time and may make it harder for you to take loans in the future.

In these tough economic times, it’s hard to stay confident even if you’ve been many years on a job.  Before you get yourself in a financial bind, pay off those bills and get rid of the debt while you still have a source of income.  When the worst happens and you find yourself unemployed, at least you won’t have to worry about debt.
