Dealing with a Friend Who Has Porn Addiction

Share

According to one online statistic, about 10% of adults admit to sexual addiction, and that 70% of males aged 18 to 34 visit porn sites in a typical month.  Though the figures may be questioned, the easy access of pornographic materials from either traditional media, such as literature and videos, and the Internet, increases the likelihood of pornography addiction.

Signs of porn addiction

The signs of addiction are the same whatever the object of the addiction is.  You can see obsession and compulsion to view pornographic materials in pornography addicts.  Though hard to observe unless mentioned in conversations, pornography addicts also engage in sexual fantasies, increased masturbation, and even fall into paraphiliac tendencies and sexual aggression.  One can also notice an increase in the participation in cybersex as these feed the fantasies and sexual gratification that a person addicted to porn craves for.

Dealing with a friend with porn addiction

The best way to deal with a friend with porn addiction is to convince him or her to seek treatment either from a psychiatrist or family therapist.  Treatment includes addressing possible traumas, depression, and other underlying cause for the sexual addiction.  Medication can also be taken to curb the pleasure derived from the addiction.  One can also promote abstinence such as using Internet filters to ban access from pornographic
material, and preventing any kind of exposure to pornographic materials.

Effects of porn addiction

At the very least, it could cause disruption in daily life.   But it can also lead to damaging social, romantic, and marital relations.  Porn addiction can lead to disinterest in one’s partner due to tendencies for sexual fantasies.  One also may neglect a partner’s needs due to dissatisfaction from real life lovemaking.  It can also be a financial burden as the purchase of pornographic material is uncontrolled.  Worse, porn addiction can also lead to sexual aggression and might lead to possible perpetration of sexual assault or unaccepted sexual behavior.

Once you see the signs of porn addiction in a friend, you should be concerned and intervene on the addiction as early as possible.  One thing to remember is that porn addiction, like any other addiction, is a disease, and not something that should be looked down upon but addressed.  The good thing is that it can be cured.  With the proper advise of a professional, restricted access to pornographic material, and much support and guidance, pornographic addiction can be beaten.
