Dealing with Online Gaming Addiction among Children

Share

For all children, playing games is a natural part of growing up.  It allows them a chance to experience competition while interacting and socializing with others.  However, online gaming seems to be so enjoyable that many children today prefer staying indoors than outdoors.  This is because online gaming offers the chance of enjoyment without having to strap on a pair of sneakers, and without having to break a sweat.  Because of this, children no longer get the exercise they need from outdoor games.  Another reason why
online gaming is so addictive is because it is deliberately designed to be this way in order to make money.  The creators of online games are constantly inventing new and exciting adventures and twists, which, unfortunately, make a lot of children hooked and addicted.

Effects of gaming addiction on your child’s behavior

Some effects of online gaming addiction on your child’s behavior include laziness, impatience, and a lack of knowledge about the real world.  This is because the pace of online games is so quick that children get used to having everything as soon as possible.  It also causes laziness because children no longer have to move their bodies in order to interact and compete with others.  Finally, online gaming addiction can cause
children to become disconnected from the real world as they are so consumed with the virtual world that they practically live in.

Dealing with a child who has online gaming addiction

Most of the time, children who are addicted to online gaming are not exposed enough to the beauty and wonders of the outdoors.  Many parents whose children are addicted to online games are those who are not around often enough to take their children outside.  A great way to deal with a child who is addicted to online gaming is by scheduling certain days of the week when he or she is taken outside to play a sport.  If this is not possible, it is advisable that you enroll your child in a sport— such as soccer, baseball, or dance class—which will occupy his or her mind even when there are no school classes for the day.

Understanding the possible causes of your child’s addictive behavior

One of the most common causes of a child’s addictive behavior towards online gaming is his or her inner feeling of not having a place in the real world.  In other words, isolation could be a main reason why your child would rather interact on a virtual level rather than on a physical level.  Try to find out if perhaps your child is being bullied.  Oftentimes, when children are bullied, they tend to disconnect from the real world and instead connect with the virtual world where they are free from bullies and other troubles.

Ways to avoid future addiction to online gaming

The best way to avoid future addiction to online gaming is by getting your child to go outdoors.  Prepare outdoor activities that include playing fun and exciting games, Finally, you must constantly remind your child that the online gaming world is not realistic, and that the real world awaits.
