How to Deal with Inclement Weather During a Planned Hiking Trip
Going on a hiking trip is a very thrilling activity. Climbing mountains and following trails promise an adventure of a lifetime. However, this activity can be very dangerous during inclement weather. For some hikers, however, the bad weather condition only adds challenge and excitement. There is nothing wrong in going on a hiking trip even if the weather is not too good. Just do the following things to make sure that you won’t be putting yourself at risk.
Determine if the weather is too bad.
It is best that you gather information from official sources about the real weather condition. If you think you can still manage to hike during certain weather conditions without really endangering yourself, go on. Just be extra cautious.
Prepare the items that would keep you safe.
For rainy weather, you should bring supplies and gear that will protect you from the cold and rain. A raincoat is a must. You also have to wear boots with corrugated soles because the trail would surely get slippery in this weather condition. A walking stick would also be a great aid. Bring also clothes that would keep you warm to prevent getting hypothermia.
Bring your cellphone, a compass, and maps.
Your cellphone is your means of communication if you need rescuing. You have to take note of the phone numbers of the emergency centers near the hiking area. Aside from your phone, you should also bring navigation tools such as maps and a compass.
Choose your route carefully.
If it is constantly raining, you should avoid following trails along rivers and streams. You should also avoid crossing inundated bridges. As much as possible, stay away from areas with water or those that are muddy.
You should only decide to go if you think that you can still manage to keep yourself safe despite the not-so-good weather. But if you think that the weather is just too bad, don’t hesitate to cancel your planned hiking trip. It’s better to postpone the trip than to place yourself at risk.
