How to Deal with Negative People around You

Share

Being around negative people can be so discouraging and stressful.  Not only do they see that the glass is half empty, but they see all the stains on the glass as well.  They complain about everything, and they often find something or someone to hate, like you, for instance.  Negative people are like toxins.  Constant and prolonged exposure to them can cause serious damage to your emotional and mental well-being as negativism can be contagious.  Sometimes, getting away from them is as easy as leaving a room.  Yet, it becomes more difficult if negative people surround you are at work and at home.  So how do you cope?

Understand that hurting people hurt people

Oftentimes, people become negative as a result of a bad past or experiences, in which they’d been terribly disappointed .  If you try to know where they’re coming, you may understand that negative people have so much pain built up inside of them over the years.  You may realize that they’re not after you, at all.  Oftentimes, their bitterness just pours out without them singling out a target.

Stay positive in a negative environment

The presence of negative people around you can leave you feeling emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually drained.  The greatest threat from being around them is that the chronic negativism could rub off on you.  So might as well make a commitment never to join their pity parties.  If it is unavoidable, always find a way to point out the positive.  For instance, if a negative person says, “Sure they got me promoted, but only because they want me transferred to another department,” respond with, “Congratulations! I’m sure this will be good for your career.”  Do not encourage them further.  If you remain consistent with this, they’d either be too tired to argue or will eventually leave you out of their pity parties.

Choose your battles

If you’re getting picked on by someone with a negative mindset, don’t lose your marbles.  Think about more productive things that you can accomplish instead of entertaining what the other person says or does against you.

While it’s not always possible to escape from negative people, you can deal with them without letting them get the best of you.  People who are a pain are often people in pain. You don’t have to love them, but you can try to understand them.  Even if you can’t control what they say or do, you can control yourself.  It’s all about making a choice how to respond to them.  It’s not going to be easy at first, but your efforts are going to pay off in the end.
